about

The Northern Flicker is a new Montpelier-based independent publication exploring politics, arts, and culture. It currently publishes two columns.

Our regular political column summarizes and responds to happenings in Vermont's state and municipal governments. The political goals of the column include:

  1. Facilitating oversight of Vermont policies and politicians, across party lines
  2. Increasing access to political agency for busy Vermonters
  3. Supporting a coalition of young, diverse, working Vermonters in taking leadership at all levels of Vermont governance to develop progressive, adaptive solutions for Vermont's future.

Chaos Composition is an irregular arts and letter column exploring (among other things), songwriting, film analysis, literature, queer culture, and history.

The hope is that the project will grow to include more contributors, more columns, and more informed Vermont-based journalism. Who knows? Big things could be coming on the horizon. You should probably stay tuned.

F. M. Smith (that's me!) is a writer, musician, and public media employee. A transplant from Pennsylvania, she's been in Vermont for thirteen years, where she's collected some tales of her own to tell. She's very passionate about stories and structures and how we analyze them. In addition to this publication, she's currently writing a musical.

The Northern Flicker is made possible with the editorial support of Ari Erlbaum, Jesse Scarlato, and Kat Stoddard. Special thanks to Matthew Martin for his role as contributing photographer.
