Fern Maddie is the folk/singer-songwriter project of F. M. Smith. Fern released two records under the moniker, both of which she co-produced: 2020's North Branch River and 2022's Ghost Story. Ghost Story earned national and international acclaim, including a five-star review in The Guardian. This resulted in a successful tour of the UK and Northern Ireland in January 2023.

current musical projects

Since taking a hiatus from performing, I've been working on songwriting. In summer 2024, I received a grant from the Vermont Arts Council to compose a Vermont-set rock opera titled Adult Children, which is currently underway and due to be be completed Spring 2025.

This winter, I also wrote and recorded a feature song for a forthcoming Vermont-based documentary by Jesse Huffman, titled Claim the Lane.
